Ames spreads EDS awareness

Event By: Team Up 4 Community

Event Type: Health & Medicine

Sport: Team

Date: May 8, 2017

Location:
198 Baltimore Avenue Massapequa
New York 11758, United States

About:

Ninth-graders at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus raised awareness for a rare disease, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, on May 4. The school hosted Zebra Day, and students and staff were encouraged to wear black and white that day. EDS syndromes are a group of connective tissue disorders that have various affects on the body including frequent dislocation of joints, stretchy skin, easy scarring and chronic pain. Student Natalie Dahlquist, who has EDS, organized the fundraiser at Ames. She sold zebra-striped ribbons as a way of raising money for the Ehlers-Danlos Society. Donations will be used for genetic research, as it takes people with EDS on average 10 years to receive a diagnosis. There is no cure, but symptoms can be managed. “It’s really important to spread awareness” Natalie said. “These donations are really helpful.”
